Microsoftは6月17日(米国時間)、「Changes to driver publication for Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008 - Microsoft Tech Community」において、同日をもってWindows 7 SP1、Windows Server 2008、Windows Server 2008 R2のWindows Updateへのドライバの配信を停止すると伝えた。

Windows 7 SP1、Windows Server 2008、Windows Server 2008 R2向けのSHA-1ルート認証局は2021年5月9日にすでに期限切れとなっており、Microsoftでは使用を廃止している。このため、パートナーから互換性のないSHA-2署名付きドライバが公開される可能性があり、こうした潜在的な影響を最小限に抑えるためにSHA-2署名付きドライバのWindows Updateへの配信も中止すると説明している。

今回ドライバの配信が終了したWindowsは2020年1月14日にすでにサポートが終了しているが、Windowsハードウェア互換性プログラム（WHCP）のためにWindows 7、Windows Server 2008、Windows Server 2008 R2ドライバは2023年1月まで引き続き利用が可能。

なお、ESU (Extended Security Updates)プログラムを利用している場合には、Windows Server Update Services（WSUS）やその他のサポートされている方法を使って管理対象のデバイスにドライバを配信することができるとされている。
