今回は皆さんにもなじみの深い携帯電話の記事を2つ紹介しようと思います。

一つは【Cancer Warning Labels for Cell Phones?】という記事。サンフランシスコの州知事が携帯電話の販売時にそのパッケージ上に、最低でもその価格表記と同じぐらいの大きさで、タバコに見られるような健康への注意書きを求めていきたいと語っているお話です。

Newsom is calling for cell phone boxes top have labels mush like cigarette packs, with what's called the radiation "absorption rate" for phones when they're sold. "The information exists, but not at the point of sale," Newsom says in a statement." He says he wants "radiation levels next to each phone, in a font at least as large as the price."

携帯電話の発する電磁波や放射物が体に何らかの影響を及ぼすか否かに関しては今までも賛否両論あるのは皆さんもご存知かと思います。同記事にはこのようにあります。

But the FCC says all cell phones sold in this country are safe, and even the American Cancer Society is on record as saying cell phones are "unlikely" to cause cancer.

FCC（Federal Communication Commission - 連邦通信委員会は American Cancer Society（米国癌協会)の見解として携帯電話が脳の癌の原因にはなり得ないと発表しているとしながらも、今回はサンフランシスコの州知事の「携帯電話は非電離放射線を放出しており、非電離放射線自体は無害で太陽が放出する放射物よりは量的にも少ないことはわかっている。しかし少量とは言え、体に密着させた状態で長い間浴び続けることは何らかの危険の元になり得る」という見解も取り上げています。

Cell phones emit what we call non-ionizing radiation, which is thought to be safe. It's less than the radiation we get from the sun. But the thinking is that, if you have something very close to you, a lot of the time, (such radiation), even if it's a low dose, there's a potential that it can cause risk.

今回の州知事の発案が会議を通れば、アメリカでは初、今後サンフランシスコで販売されるすべての携帯電話のパッケージにはタバコに見られるような注意書きが求められることになります。たとえば「SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Cell phone may cause brain cancer.(公衆衛生局長官により警告：携帯電話は脳腫瘍の原因にもなり得ます)」といったような……。

ところが最近もう一つ話題を呼んでいるのが【Can Cell Phones Help Fight Alzheimer's?】という記事。こちらは携帯電話から出る電磁波は逆に体に良いというお話で、それもなんとあの悪名高きアルツハイマー病の予防と治療に効果的だと報じています。

こちらはまだネズミによる実験段階とはしているものの、記事では、

It surprised us to find that cell phone exposure, begun in early adulthood, protects the memory of mice otherwise destined to develop Alzheimer's symptoms," study researcher Gary Arendash, PhD, of the University of South Florida, says in a news release. "It was even more astonishing that the electromagnetic waves generated by cell phones actually reversed memory impairment in old Alzheimer's mice.

南フロリダ大のGary Arendash博士が行った実験によると、若い段階から携帯電話にさらし続けたアルツハイマーを発症して当然のネズミがそうはならなかった。それどころか既に発症しているネズミにおいても、回復の兆しさえ見られたとしています。

まるで真逆のこの２つの記事。はたして携帯電話が私たちの体に及ぼす影響は……害なのか、益なのか、本当のところは一体どっち? 是非知りたいものですよね…!!??
