発売開始以来多くの男性に、公然的に且つ時には非密議に愛用され続けている「Viagra(バイアグラ)」と言えば「セックスピル」の王道をいくもの。肩で風切る勢いで世界に一気に広まったのは皆さんの記憶にも新しいところでしょう。しかし今度は! 何と! その女性版が出るかも知れない……というお話です。

記事によると、「～ a new drug that failed to make it to market as an antidepressant is showing some hope for low libido in women」、つまりこの薬は、元々「antidepressant(抗鬱剤)」として商品化しようとしていたものだったようです。でもそれ自体は上手くいかず、その代わりに「low libido in women(性的衝動の低い女性)」に有効だということが新たに分かったのだとか!?

ただしその効果は……

「Unlike Viagra, which is used to treat male erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the genitals, this drug acts on the woman's brain to enhance mood. ～ say the drug is effective in treating a newly coined condition known as hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) or lack of libido.」

どうもこの薬、男性用のバイアグラのように血流を上げることで男性性器の勃起を促すような身体的(physical)なものではなく、女性の脳に訴える精神的(mental)なものだそうです。脳内のserotonin(セロトニン)、norepinephrine(ノルエピネフリン-副腎髄質ホルモン)、dopamine(ドーパミン)といった物質のバランスを保ち、ムードを高めるもので、HSDD(Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder-性的欲求低下障害)には効果あり、と記事では伝えています。

今回この薬の効果を試すテストに集められたのは「women 18 to 50, a wide range, and from different countries, ～ 1,378 study participants」「多くの異なる地域や国から、年齢18～50才、総数1,378名」。この薬、精神的に作用すると言うことから「There was also a very strong placebo effect among the women.」「女性の場合は強いstrong placebo effect(疑似薬効果)もあった(＝あり得る)」という前提で「～ treated for 24 weeks showed significant improvements in sexual desire and functioning compared with those on a placebo」とあるように、24週にわたり投与を続けたところ、飛躍的効果が見られたそうです。また疑似薬を用いたケースに比べてもその差は歴然だったと報告されたとか。

さらに同記事によると約43%にも上る女性が何らかの性的悩みを抱えているとのこと。この薬の開発段階は既にPhase IIIまで来ているようで、バイアグラ同様、医師の処方、または最寄りの薬局などで手に入る日が来るのでしょうか!?
